First Lecture in English

On January 16th2018 Dr. Dror Weil (Princeton University / Max Planck Institute, Berlin) held a lecture titled: “Cherishing Knowledge from Afar: Late Imperial China’s Discovery and Rediscovery of Arbo-Persian Texts.” The talk demonstrated that Arabic and Persian texts constituted epistemic vehicles, introducing Western concepts, theories and methodologies to late imperial China. At the same time, Dr. Weil suggested that China’s Arabo-Persian scholarship served as a precursor to scholarly developments that took place in the larger Islamic world during the Early Modern period. The lecture was well-attended and followed by a lively debate.
